This is a quick and dirty update. You can now get a vanity URL for your G+ account (e.g., https://plus.google.com/+MelanieNelson). It’s easy. Just go to http://bit.ly/1f49MYC and get started. You’ll be done in less than five minutes, I’d guess.
That’s it. Nothing major; I just thought you’d want to know. By the way, this is the kind of stuff I always post on the BB101 Facebook page and our Blogging Basics 101 G+ page. If you haven’t Liked or Circled us yet, what are you waiting for? I’d love for you to join us over there. We have bacon.*
I don’t see a way to give your G+ business page a vanity URL yet, but I’ll let you know when I do. I received an email on November 1, 2013 telling me I could claim the vanity URL for BB101. The email had a link to click that took me to a page where I could claim it. If you claimed your G+ page url, please feel free to leave it in the comments below!
*We don’t really have bacon. But that would be cool if we did.
They are asking for phone number verification first . should i verify that for vanity link for my google plus
The most important part in this process is that you make sure your Google profile and your website are linked up correctly. If you meet the other criteria, but you haven’t received an email or access to the vanity URLS, it’s probably because there’s a problem with your Google authorship markup.
I’ve created a quick guide for anyone who is using WordPress on our site. It should be linked bellow via CommentLuv. 🙂
good quick pointer there; I already submitted my preferred vanity id. They wouldn’t give me mr.midway so i requested mistermidway as a lot of people know me by that name and it is how i sign my blog posts. Take care, max
Hi Melanie, For all these vanity url facility is given???
I didn’t get any mail regarding this. Can u share how to get a vanity URL like u did?
Tushar, you can go to this URL: http://bit.ly/1f49MYC Those directions will get you started. I did get a note from someone that they couldn’t get theirs yet, but I’m not sure what was going on there. It may be that they’re rolling this feature out in waves. However, that’s the only case I’ve heard of where someone had trouble. I think most people are getting theirs just fine.
Hi Melanie. For those of us new to this, could you tell us why we might want this type of URL? Thanks.
Laura,
You should try to claim your name on all social media platforms. It not only helps with branding, it makes it really easy for people to find you when the name is the same across all platforms. Sometimes you can’t get what you want/need and you have to improvise a little.
My name is very common so I have to be quick. 🙂
Melanie – I love your style of writing, very down home and easy and to the point! We ‘Liked’ your page today and look forward to more great tips and tricks. 🙂
Thanks Barbara! I appreciate the compliment and the follows. Have a great weekend!
I almost got mine but it asked for my cell phone number. Didn’t care for that idea.
Judi, I can understand that. I already have my phone linked with Google as a way to retrieve any lost passwords. However, I bet you could set up Google Voice (http://google.com/voice) and use that to have them send you the passcode.
Headed over to google voice. But had to give a forwarding number to use with it. sigh
